- Dig and divide ornamental grasses and perennials.
- Remove stakes installed with new trees or shrubs the previous fall. This will result in a stable yet resilient tree.
- Thin out old pachysandra beds and destroy diseased plants.
- Plant a tree.
- Prepare new planting beds by digging in organic matter such as peat moss and compost.
- The lawn will start to grow, slowly at first then very rapidly as spring progresses. The lawn can be raked clear of debris prior to mowing with the blades set high at first.
- Remove dead flowers from bulbs that have flowered; if left seeds will be produced which will hold back bulb development.
- Lawn edges can be trimmed and worm casts brushed off.
- Plans for boundaries, walls, fences and hedging may be re-assessed.
- The edges of the lawn can be tied up by trimming back any herbaceous plants that encroach on the lawn.
- Many seeds can be sown, especially those directly into open ground.
- The ground needs to be forked over, removing weeds, and fertilized before annuals are sown.
